Our First Walker!

It's official. Kayla is walking! She took her first few steps on September 19th, 3 weeks after her first birthday (11 months old, corrected age). Since then we haven't seen much walking, just a few steps here and there, in-between toys or from the couch to a toy. But all of a sudden within the last week, she has become very brave! She now pulls herself up on anything she can, and then just walks across the room.

Soooo...here's a couple of videos of my big girl walking.

This is a more recent one...now that she can make it across the room!:

TJ's First Haircut

Well, it was long overdue...but I finally caved in. TJ got his first haircut. It was a tough decision because his hair was growing so inconsistently! Because of his helmet, his hair hasn't really been growing on the sides of his head. But, he has been sporting a mullet for quite some time, because the back of his hair was getting LONG! It was starting to curl up around his helmet in the back...so I pulled the trigger. And he was SOOOO good...again, didn't even cry!

12 Month Old Check-Up

We were a little late in visiting the pediatrician for Kayla & TJ's 12 month check-up, but we did finally make it. I think we were there during the 2nd week in September...so about 2-3 weeks late. Oops! Anyway, here is the official update!

Kayla weighed in at 21 lbs 6 oz, which puts her in the 55th percentile for weight. Just perfect! She measured a tall 30 1/2 inches, putting her in the 80th percentile for height! And her head was 46 1/2 cm around, which puts her in the 90th percentile for head size...surprise surprise! Everyone knew she had a big BRAIN!

TJ weighed in at 18 lbs 9 oz, which puts him in the 5th percentile! Skinny little man, still! He was 29 1/2 inches tall though, which put him in the 45th percentile for height. And his head circumference was 45 1/2 cm, putting him in the 25th percentile. The good news is that he may officially be "caught up" in height as 45th percentile is exactly where he should be! I was sad that he is still so skinny, but the doc says that upward progression is all we ask of him! He was extremely satisfied with the 5th percentile.

The funniest part of this doc visit was that the babies didn't cry. Just a little at the end when they got their shots...but during the visit with the doc...not a peep. The doc said "how many hours of sleep do they get at night, and during naps?" I said "11-12 hours a night, and two 1-2 hour naps per day." He said "Are they eating all table foods like veggies, meats, breads, fruit?" I said "yup, they eat everything and anything I give them. Exactly what we eat." Then he did his examination on both of them, and no one cried. Not even a whimper. They even cracked a few smiles. At the end the doctor said "So these two sleep all night, they take good naps, they eat everything, and they don't cry at the doctor. You officially have the best behaved 1 year old twins in the history of the world." Ha ha ha...we think so too!

TJ at One Year Old

Our little, tiny boy is also one year old already! This has been a BIG year for him! He has been through so much. Apnea Monitors, weekly visits to the Physical Therapist, 2 helmets (and soon to be 3)...it has been TOUGH! But my little guy is the toughest around. Let's take a look back at TJ's journey through the first year of his life:

Birth Day:

2 Days old:

3 Months Old:

6 Months Old:

9 Months Old:

12 Months Old:

TJ is crawling like a crazy man, and pulling up on everything. He is slowly starting to make progress with cruising on the furniture, and trying his hand at bridging the furniture. He makes Mommy very nervous sometimes because he is very brave but still quite wobbly. He is really giggly and crazy and can often be seen doing this:

video

TJ has 8 teeth. Yes...you read that correctly. EIGHT teeth. His teeth have just been popping out all over the place. Some of them killed him...some of them came through with no warning. Getting teeth is the ONLY thing TJ is ahead of Kayla in right now. And he is beating her by a landslide.

TJ says his first word (other than MaMa & DaDa) which is "Cat" as well! He (unlike Kayla) is very gentle with the cats and loves to pet them, although he gets very excited and tends to scream...which makes them run away. TJ loves to read books, and especially likes the ones that have things to "feel" in them. He also likes to play independently, and doesn't need a lot of playtime attention from Mommy. We sometimes call him our "monkey" because he lays on the floor and plays with toys over his head with both his hands AND feet!

TJ LOVES his food. He will literally eat anything you try to feed him, and he never leaves a crumb on his plate.

TJ also loves playing "I'm gonna get ya" with his sister, and thinks it's hysterical when she is quickly crawling toward him. He loves to be tickled, especially on his bottom ribs or his inner thighs. He is so ticklish that he will ball up and start laughing on your approach, before you even touch him.

Ok...so it's only fair that I tell you TJ's "bad" habits too! TJ is very active and loves to crawl. So it is near impossible these days to change his diaper, because he flips onto his tummy and tries to crawl away! That's it though! He is a very good baby mostly...and he is even starting to hold his own with his sister. It's not so easy for her to snatch a toy from his hands anymore...he holds on with a death grip when he sees her coming!

TJ gives kisses too, but the recipients are not usually Mommy & Daddy. TJ usually can be seen giving kisses to his sister, the cats, or to other little girls. Hmmmm....

TJ likes to play a game with us in the car too. He makes a tiny, quick little scream. If we respond with the same scream, we can go back and forth for 10 minutes sometimes! I guess he spends so much time in the car these days, he has to entertain himself somehow!

Our little boy is so good. He is such a trooper and handles all of the doctors, therapy, and long rides in the car so well. We are SO very proud of how far he has come!

Kayla at One Year Old

One year certainly has come upon us quickly. Kayla amazes us everyday. Not only is she starting to LOOK like such a big girl, but she learns so much so fast now.

First...let's take a look back. Just a fun reminder of how far she has come...

Birth Day:

3 Days Old:

3 Months Old:

6 Months Old:

9 Months Old:

12 Months:

So now that we looked back at her pictures...let's talk a little about who Kayla is today!
Kayla is standing & cruising down the furniture at high speeds! She can even take a few steps between Mommy & Daddy without holding on. She still thinks she needs to hold on, but sometimes we catch her standing and holding a toy with both hands. If she is really intent on the toy, she doesn't realize she is standing without support. She also bridges furniture with ease.

Kayla has 5 teeth, although the 5th one just came through. She has a funny face that she makes at us when she's being silly:

Kayla can point, and points out Mommy, Daddy, sometimes TJ, and the cats. She LOVES the cats and though she is VERY rough with them, they are very good with her. She even says "Cat" which is her first word other than "MaMa" and "DaDa". It sounds more like "Dat", but she says it and points at the cats when they come in the room. If you say "How big is Kayla?" she will respond by lifting her hands up in the air while you say "SOOOO big!". Kayla also can do a little sign language. She can do the sign for "more" and does it between bites of food, and when she sees a cup or bottle and wants a drink. She waves hello and good-bye, and if you sing the Wiggles song "One Finger, One Thumb", she will put her finger & thumb in the air and wave her hand. Kayla loves to dance, and does so every time she hears music, including when you sing, hum, or whistle. She also "gives kisses" now too. She will give them to Mommy, Daddy, TJ, Penny, the cats, her toys & Grandpa most of the time...but she ALWAYS gives kisses to Grandma. And sometimes even without prompting! Grandma definitely gets the most kisses of all!

Since it's only fair to tell you the BAD and the good...Kayla is bad sometimes. She likes to hit her brother (or grab his face), and seems to have noticed that it gets Mommy's attention very quickly. If you see it and say, "NO!" she will do it again and look right at you. Almost as if to say, "there, I did it again...now what?" So, we are dealing with that, and it does seem to be getting better. She also takes toys away from TJ, and sometimes pulls his hands off of a toy that they are sharing. Oh well...I am sure that this is just the beginning of the power struggle between these two! The good news is that she always says sorry to TJ with a kiss! I don't mean to sound like she is ALWAYS mean to him though. For most of the day, you can find Kayla & TJ playing nicely, chatting away, and often cracking up laughing at each other!

We are so proud of our BIG girl!

Happy 1st Birthday, Kayla & TJ!

Wow...a whole year, just like that. My little babies are no longer little babies. This was, all at once, the most challenging and most rewarding year of my life. In celebration, we had a "little" family party at Grandma & Grandpa's house. We also had a little mini celebration at home on their actual birthday. All parties were fun, and well deserved. These babies put in a lot of hard work this year, and they have overcome so many challenges.

For the mini-party at home, Mommy & Daddy, Auntie Jess, Uncle Jason, Penny, Grandpa & Grandpa Dave were all there to celebrate. The babies had their first taste of cake that day. It was just a little bit though, as we wanted their first real "piece" of cake to be at their party (and of course...to be Mother Mousse cake, anyway!).

Ooooooh! Presents!

Penny enjoyed her cake too...

but not as much as the Twins!

Fun after cake & presents...(sorry, but TJ had WAY too much chocolate on his clothes to be crawling around my living room...so he had to go naked!)

And then the BIG party...

All pretty in our party clothes:

Finally! It seems around here that most of Kayla & TJ's friends are girls. He was SO excited to finally have another boy to play with. Thanks, Christian!

Boy, Can They EAT!

The babies are almost a year old now, and I just thought I'd write a little about what they are eating these days. They both have very hearty appetites, and eat almost anything! We had a tough start to switching over from purees to what I like to call "real people food"...but a little patience and a lot of persistence paid off.

Kayla & TJ now eat 3 full meals a day, and 1 snack.
Breakfast consists of 7 oz of formula and food. Some of their favorite breakfast foods are homemade cinnamon oatmeal with chopped fresh fruit (usually peaches or apples), pancakes/french toast/waffles with strawberries, cinnamon toast with canteloupe or honeydew, Homemade Farina with fruit. Unfortunately, Kayla doesn't like eggs very much, and although I do re-try it about every 2 weeks...she really isn't crazy about them!
Lunch consists of 8 oz. formula and food. Their favorite lunches are toasted cheese or toasted cheese & tomato on whole wheat, quesadillas, peanut butter & jelly on whole wheat, leftovers from dinner the night before, and of course...always lots of fruit or veggies!
Their afternoon snack is usually a yogurt or a cheese stick, or some cheerios, puffs, or goldfish.
Dinner consists of 8 oz of formula, and really...whatever we are eating for dinner! These guys eat steak, chicken, pasta, meatloaf, meatballs, sweet potatoes, regular potatoes, green beans, carrots, asparagus, zucchini, broccoli, cauliflower, eggplant...pretty much everything. They even ate enchiladas a few weeks back!
